International Van Lines

  • Award: Our pick for insurance plans
  • Service Model: Full service
  • Founded: 2000

International Van Lines (IVL) has handled more than 500,000 moves in the United States and is available in more than 180 countries. Although limited in local moving services, IVL has several services specifically designed to support long-distance moving needs, including multiple insurance options.

If you have rare or high-value items like family heirlooms, fine art and antiques, IVL’s coverage may be especially appealing. The company offers comprehensive coverage all-risk insurance and total-loss insurance. Available with the purchase of packing services, all-risk insurance covers the full value you claim on your belongings at the cost of 4% of the declared value. Total-loss insurance is provided to customers who opt for self-packing; it also provides full reimbursement of your items, but it comes with more coverage limitations. Total-loss insurance costs 2% of the declared value of your items.

International Van Lines is both a broker and a carrier, meaning it has its own fleet of trucks and moving crews and partners with other movers to serve customers outside of its main service regions. IVL’s extensive network of providers allows customers to locate a local mover more efficiently, with the added benefit of having the relocation backed by IVL’s customer support. However, it’s important to note that procedures, policies and customer service vary by company in IVL’s network, so your experience may vary depending on your location and the provider assigned to your move.

International Van Lines provides traditional full-service amenities — packing, unpacking, loading and unloading. As a company specializing in long-distance moves, IVL has a variety of relevant add-on services, such as disassembly and reassembly of furniture and disconnection and reconnection of major appliances. In addition, the company will create custom crates for items like TVs, stereo equipment, fine art and antiques that may not fit securely in traditional moving boxes.

International Van Lines’ services include:

  • Full and partial packing
  • Fragile-only packing
  • Special handling of fitness equipment and other difficult items
  • Custom crating for electronics
  • Furniture disassembly and reassembly
  • Vehicle relocation
  • GPS shipment tracking
  • Online moving calculator
  • Moving checklists
  • Packing and moving supplies
  • Optional temporary storage units

International Van Lines determines your moving cost based on factors like how far you are moving, the date of your move and the total weight of your belongings.

While IVL does not provide binding estimates—the exact amount you will pay on moving day—the company does give ballpark quotes over the phone. Customers can better prepare for their moving costs through IVL’s website, which includes a detailed list of associated industry-standard moving fees for services like transporting items down multiple flights of stairs.

IVL charges a 25% deposit when you book your moving date. You can make payments using cash or credit cards. The company provides a 10–15% military discount.

  • Founded: 1982

JK Moving provides full- and partial-service moving, along with a variety of specialty services to help customize your package, but is only available for long-distance and international moves in Florida.

The company’s standout offering is perhaps its option to finance your move, a feature most moving companies do not offer. JK Moving partners with Enhancify for financing rates as low as 0% same-as-cash, subject to credit approval. It is crucial to pay attention to the interest rate JK Moving offers you since a higher interest rate could increase the total cost of your move.

  • Award: Our pick for self-service mover
  • Service Model: Self-service
  • Founded: 1998

PODS provides storage solutions and transport and delivery services for local and interstate moves in 44 states and Washington, D.C. It is not available in Alaska, Montana, North Dakota, Vermont, West Virginia or Wyoming.

The company is a popular alternative for DIY movers who want assistance with some parts of the process — such as transport and delivery — but prefer to handle packing and loading on their own. It’s also a good fit for anyone who will need short- or long-term storage options before, during or after their relocation. PODS will connect you to one of its vetted professional local moving company partners if you want help loading and unloading your containers.

PODS also specializes in handling moves to and from metropolitan areas, handling unique city concerns like parking and monitoring your container during loading and unloading to prevent tickets, thefts and other issues. PODS’ City Service is only available in Boston, Chicago, Denver, Los Angeles, New York, Philadelphia, San Francisco, Seattle, Toronto, Canada and Washington, D.C.

PODS offers steel containers that come in three sizes. The smallest container — 8 feet — is suitable for one-bedroom or studio apartments. The 12-foot container can hold about two rooms’ worth of belongings, and the 16-foot container is typically large enough to accommodate a 1,200-square-foot home.

PODS delivers containers to your current address for loading. The containers sit at ground level and therefore do not require a ramp, which makes the loading and unloading process easier. When you have filled your containers, PODS will pick them up and drop them off at your new home. The company offers flexible scheduling for the pick-up of containers, allowing customers to decide how long they need to fill their containers.

PODS’ moving services include:

  • Local and regional moving
  • National moving
  • International moving
  • Vehicle transport
  • Carrier liability insurance
  • Monthly storage
  • Online moving resources
  • Boxes and packing supplies
  • Professional third-party mover recommendations

PODS only gives online instant quotes for local moves quotes. You must call PODS for a free quote on a long-distance relocation. Quotes are valid for up to seven days and include the first month’s rental fee for your containers, as well as any delivery and pick-up charges.

PODS operates on a flat monthly rental fee schedule, which means you cannot get a prorated amount if you use a container for less than 30 days.

The company offers discounts, such as free delivery and up to 15% off rent with the purchase of at least three months of storage for customers who are moving locally (less than 50 miles).

PODS accepts all major credit cards and handles most billing through automatic charges or debits (acceptance of cash and checks varies by location). Local moves are charged one day before the delivery of your container. If you opt for short- or long-term storage — or decide to keep your container at your home for longer than one month — those charges will be processed each month on the same date as your initial payment. Long-distance orders are processed one week before your scheduled service and include the drop-off and first month’s rent on your container as well as transit and delivery to your new address.

When deciding on a mover to assist with your relocation to or from New Jersey, it is essential to consider what services and features are necessary and desired for your specific move. For full-service moves, International Van Lines and American Van Lines offer a variety of options to help you customize your move. JK Moving is the only provider on our list that offers financing. If you prefer a more DIY approach to moving or want to save money by packing and loading items yourself, you may want to consider a self-service alternative like PODS. Before hiring a moving company, we recommend requesting a free quote from at least three different providers so you can better compare pricing, services and availability in your area.

Methodology: Our system for ranking the best moving companies

We collected data on dozens of moving companies, both full-service and self-service, and created a comprehensive rating system to formulate our rankings, grade each company and provide objective findings to our readers. The end result of weighing a wide range of factors is a cumulative score for each provider.

We called each moving company directly, spoke with representatives to get an in-depth understanding of their offerings and simulated the quote and scheduling process. We also reviewed each company’s contents protection (insurance) plan information in detail, and we closely examined more than 100 customer reviews to understand the customer service experience with each provider.

All company data is monitored on an ongoing basis so that all rankings and information remain up-to-date.

Once we gathered all relevant data, we used the following scoring system to grade each moving company on a 100-point scale:

  • Moving Services (20 points): Does the company provide its services for local moves, interstate moves and/or international moves? The more options available, the higher the score. Points were deducted for any local moving restrictions, such as a minimum mileage requirement or limited availability.
  • Mover Type (3 points): Is the provider a moving broker or a carrier? Given that carriers often offer a more seamless customer communication experience, more points were awarded to companies that act as carriers instead of or in addition to acting as moving brokers.
  • Additional Services (20 points): Services we factored in include packing and unpacking, loading and unloading, vehicle relocation, fragile pack or specialty services and storage service. The more services a moving company offers, the higher the score it received.
  • Insurance Coverage (10 points): If a company offers only the minimum requirement of 60¢ and a full-valuation coverage option, it received a lower score. If the company offers multiple moving insurance options, such as customizable full-value coverage, it received a higher score.
  • Payment Process (20 points): For each payment option the company provides, it received more points. Options include binding estimates or fixed rates, discounts or price-matching policies, credit card payments, cash or check payments and/or financing options. Points were deducted if a company requires a deposit.
  • Availability (5 points): Companies were awarded points based on state availability.
  • Scheduling (6 points): The more scheduling options a company offers, such as online scheduling, over the phone or both, the more points it received.
  • Trailers/Containers (6 points): Companies received higher scores for having a range of trailer or container sizes.
  • Additional Benefits (5 points): What additional benefits do customers receive from the company? Does the customer have access to a moving calculator, GPS or online tracking options, a moving checklist, packing and moving materials and/or a moving inventory app? The more of these options a company provides, the more points it received.
  • Reputation (5 points): We factored in the company’s score on the Business Better Bureau (BBB) and deducted points for any alerts or pending lawsuits.
